Information

AgroParisTech Alumni, the association of AgroParisTech graduates, in partnership with the Agros d'Auvergne, are organizing their debate "Les Mardis des Agros", live from the Sommet de l'élevage, on October 3, at 6:30 pm, room 6. The theme: "BREEDING AND FOOD: GOODBYE VEALS, CACHES, SHEEP...?" Ruminant livestock farming, vital to the agricultural economy and the maintenance of ecological balance, is at the heart of intense debate. The Cour des Comptes report calls for a reduction in cattle numbers to meet climate targets, overlooking the importance of imported meat. Ruminant livestock farming shapes our landscapes, contributes to soil fertility and maintains economic and social activities in areas that are difficult to cultivate. However, excessive consumption of animal proteins and the associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are raising public health and environmental concerns. In this debate, we will seek to address these issues by asking three questions: - What is the influence of globalization on our eating habits, if we consider, for example, the place of livestock farming in the history of mankind? - How can we reconcile different livestock production systems with climate change, taking into account GHG emissions and carbon storage potential? - How can we make livestock farming attractive once again, taking into account its essential role in local life? These questions raise issues of public health, the environment and land management. The debate will also examine food policies, the impact of public policies on the development of extensive livestock systems, and the future of mixed farming. To discuss this, we will welcome: - Anthony Fardet, Principal Researcher @Institut national de la recherche - Thibault David, beef cattle breeder in Allier, president of Afdi AuRA (French farmers and international development Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) - Elyne Etienne, Agriculture and Food Manager @Foundation for Nature and Man The challenge is to strike a balance between the need for livestock farming in our societies, its impact on climate change, and human health concerns. Participants will attempt to define a path towards sustainable livestock practices that respect our natural and cultural heritage, while supporting public health and social prosperity. The conference will be moderated by Marie-Laure Hustache (journalist and consulting director for Metashift Media and for Les Émotionneurs), and will bring together experts from a variety of fields, as well as representatives of French and foreign breeders. On-site participants will be invited to share a convivial moment while sampling local products. Room 6 capacity is limited to 60 participants. We invite you to register via this link https://www.aptalumni.org/shortUrl/1cCXA, specifying your email address in order to receive the link to the replay in case you are unable to access the conference.
