Between Negative and Positive Environmental Impacts, Food Sovereignty, and the Life of Rural Territories, the Future of Ruminant Farming Is a Societal Issue In France, with a livestock population of 17 million cattle, 7 million sheep, and 1.3 million goats, ruminant farming makes use of 11.5 million hectares of grasslands, representing 25% of the national territory, and involves nearly 150,000 farms. Despite its economic weight, ruminant farming faces growing criticism: methane emissions contributing to climate change, animal welfare concerns, and nutritional questions regarding its impact on human health. However, these broad criticisms fail to consider the great diversity of farming systems, ranging from intensive feedlots to extensive grass-fed systems. From an agronomic perspective, livestock plays a crucial role in maintaining soils and plant life: providing organic matter and nutrients, sustaining biodiversity, and more. On a territorial scale, livestock farming has shaped landscapes over the centuries and today plays a key role in their maintenance: Natural grasslands and hedgerows that help conserve soil and protect biodiversity, Maintenance of mountain pastures, Prevention of land abandonment and landscape overgrowth, ensuring open and balanced rural areas. Through its labor needs, livestock farming also supports employment and human settlement, fostering social life in rural areas. Between Negative and Positive Environmental Impacts, Food Sovereignty, and the Life of Rural Territories, the Future of Ruminant Farming Is a Societal Issue In France, with a livestock population of 17 million cattle, 7 million sheep, and 1.3 million goats, ruminant farming makes use of 11.5 million hectares of grasslands, representing 25% of the national territory, and involves nearly 150,000 farms. Despite its economic weight, ruminant farming faces growing criticism: methane emissions contributing to climate change, animal welfare concerns, and nutritional questions regarding its impact on human health. However, these broad criticisms fail to consider the great diversity of farming systems, ranging from intensive feedlots to extensive grass-fed systems. From an agronomic perspective, livestock plays a crucial role in maintaining soils and plant life: providing organic matter and nutrients, sustaining biodiversity, and more. On a territorial scale, livestock farming has shaped landscapes over the centuries and today plays a key role in their maintenance: Natural grasslands and hedgerows that help conserve soil and protect biodiversity, Maintenance of mountain pastures, Prevention of land abandonment and landscape overgrowth, ensuring open and balanced rural areas. Through its labor needs, livestock farming also supports employment and human settlement, fostering social life in rural areas. Yet, these positive externalities are increasingly at odds with a worrying trend: a sharp decline in cattle and sheep populations, driven by demanding, physically challenging work combined with low profitability and limited attractiveness. Between Negative and Positive Environmental Impacts, Food Sovereignty, and the Life of Rural Territories, the Future of Ruminant Farming Is a Societal Issue In France, with a livestock population of 17 million cattle, 7 million sheep, and 1.3 million goats, ruminant farming makes use of 11.5 million hectares of grasslands, representing 25% of the national territory, and involves nearly 150,000 farms. Despite its economic weight, ruminant farming faces growing criticism: methane emissions contributing to climate change, animal welfare concerns, and nutritional questions regarding its impact on human health. However, these broad criticisms fail to consider the great diversity of farming systems, ranging from intensive feedlots to extensive grass-fed systems. From an agronomic perspective, livestock plays a crucial role in maintaining soils and plant life: providing organic matter and nutrients, sustaining biodiversity, and more. On a territorial scale, livestock farming has shaped landscapes over the centuries and today plays a key role in their maintenance: Natural grasslands and hedgerows that help conserve soil and protect biodiversity, Maintenance of mountain pastures, Prevention of land abandonment and landscape overgrowth, ensuring open and balanced rural areas. Through its labor needs, livestock farming also supports employment and human settlement, fostering social life in rural areas. Despite its economic weight, ruminant farming faces growing criticism: methane emissions contributing to climate change, animal welfare concerns, and nutritional questions regarding its impact on human health. However, these broad criticisms fail to consider the great diversity of farming systems, ranging from intensive feedlots to extensive grass-fed systems. From an agronomic perspective, livestock plays a crucial role in maintaining soils and plant life: providing organic matter and nutrients, sustaining biodiversity, and more. On a territorial scale, livestock farming has shaped landscapes over the centuries and today plays a key role in their maintenance: Natural grasslands and hedgerows that help conserve soil and protect biodiversity, Maintenance of mountain pastures, Prevention of land abandonment and landscape overgrowth, ensuring open and balanced rural areas. Through its labor needs, livestock farming also supports employment and human settlement, fostering social life in rural areas. Between Negative and Positive Environmental Impacts, Food Sovereignty, and the Life of Rural Territories, the Future of Ruminant Farming Is a Societal Issue In France, with a livestock population of 17 million cattle, 7 million sheep, and 1.3 million goats, ruminant farming makes use of 11.5 million hectares of grasslands, representing 25% of the national territory, and involves nearly 150,000 farms. Despite its economic weight, ruminant farming faces growing criticism: methane emissions contributing to climate change, animal welfare concerns, and nutritional questions regarding its impact on human health. However, these broad criticisms fail to consider the great diversity of farming systems, ranging from intensive feedlots to extensive grass-fed systems. From an agronomic perspective, livestock plays a crucial role in maintaining soils and plant life: providing organic matter and nutrients, sustaining biodiversity, and more. On a territorial scale, livestock farming has shaped landscapes over the centuries and today plays a key role in their maintenance: Natural grasslands and hedgerows that help conserve soil and protect biodiversity, Maintenance of mountain pastures, Prevention of land abandonment and landscape overgrowth, ensuring open and balanced rural areas. Through its labor needs, livestock farming also supports employment and human settlement, fostering social life in rural areas. Yet, these positive externalities are increasingly at odds with a worrying trend: a sharp decline in cattle and sheep populations, driven by demanding, physically challenging work combined with low profitability and limited attractiveness. In the context of climate change, should we not rethink agricultural policies and rebalance the CAP subsidies between crop production and livestock farming?
