Information

Pastoral systems, in which animals graze on land that is little fenced or not fenced at all, encourage interactions between domestic animals and wildlife. The risks of disease transmission associated with these interactions can have consequences for animal, environmental and human health. Biosecurity principles, designed for intensive indoor livestock systems, have limited applicability in these settings, where confinement is only temporary, restricted to certain physiological stages, or even absent altogether. But how can alternatives be developed collectively? We propose to illustrate the specific, locally adapted approaches to health risk management developed to address this challenge through three pastoral examples (the Alps, the Pyrenees and Corsica), highlighting a wide diversity of territories, diseases, and wild and domestic species. A final round table will help identify the principles of shared management of health risks linked in particular to interactions between wildlife and domestic animals in pastoral systems. With contributions from livestock farmers, researchers, members of parliament, and representatives of GTV and National Parks.
