Renewing generations of livestock farmers and shepherds to support the adaptation of pastoral systems to change?

Information

This roundtable will bring together the perspectives of stakeholders from pastoral territories in Morocco, Tunisia, and France to discuss two key questions related to the future of pastoralism. Climate change is putting the resilience of this way of managing arid and mountainous environments under particular strain. Repeated droughts and extreme variability require even greater agility from livestock farmers and shepherds. They also prompt farmers to adapt their mobility patterns and, in some cases, undertake new forms of exceptional mobility. How can stakeholders in pastoral territories support the adaptation and resilience of pastoral livestock farmers while limiting the tensions these changes may generate? At the same time, demanding working conditions, low social recognition, and limited access to resources and training are weakening generational renewal and increasing the risk of breaks in the transmission of know-how. Depending on the context, specific tensions emerge: the devaluation of these professions in Morocco and Tunisia, difficulties in recruiting new shepherds, and challenges related to integration and professional restructuring in France. Several structuring issues therefore arise: under what conditions can these professions be made viable and attractive? Speakers: Iram Montpellier Regional Office of Ouarzazate, Morocco Regional Commission for Agricultural Development, Médenine, Tunisia Isère Alpine Pastures Federation
