Combining cereals and legumes as an alternative to traditional Italian ryegrass

Traditionally, livestock farmers plant Italian ryegrass between cereals and forage maize to ensure their forage stocks. However, this catch crop needs a lot of nitrogen fertiliser and its nutritional value deteriorates rapidly if it is not harvested in time. This is why trials have been carried out to find alternatives to RGI. Recent work by Arvalis has shown that cereal-legume combinations with no nitrogen input can compete to a greater or lesser extent with RGI, both in terms of productivity and nutritional value. The results of this 2-year trial network will be discussed at this conference.
